The majority of the villagers in Tenganan work as farmers. The residents also produce various handicrafts. The most famous one is the Gringsing fabric. The weaving method is very unique, using a double tie technique which you will not find anywhere else in Indonesia.
One of the rituals performed by Tenganan ancient village residents is the Pandan War, or Mekare-kare. Two young men were fighting against each other in an arena. Each young man carries a weapon: a bunch of thorny pandan leaves, which have sharp spines. They try to inflict each other’s bodies with lashes from the leaves’ sharp thorns.
After the fight is over. They usually immediately treat these wounds using traditional ingredients made from various kinds of herbs and spices. The wound will usually heal in a few days. Pandan War performances are usually held when there is a religious ceremony. Named Ngusaba Sambah every single year between June and July.
